Director, Intellectual Property

The opportunity:

In this role, you will lead the Legal IP Team and focus on developing and driving the legal strategy for Unity's IP portfolio, including patent, trademark and copyright, as well issues around IP licensing, IP relating to M&A, open source, litigation, technology licensing and more. Your success will come from intellectual curiosity, strong practical legal skills, technology acuity, a self-starter demeanor, practicality, collaboration and communication.

What you'll be doing:

  • Lead a team of IP professionals and outside counsel to build and implement Unity’s global IP strategy, including developing and growing its patent, trademark and copyright portfolios
  • Engage in invention harvesting and patent prosecution, while ensuring strategic alignment of the portfolio
  • Align our global trademark portfolio with business needs, including enforcement as needed
  • Guide our organization around copyright issues
  • Prepare and deliver trainings on all aspects of IP
  • Structure and negotiate IP related agreements, including work with our corporate strategy team on partnerships/licensing opportunities and IP due diligence for M&A as needed
  • Strategically lead IP disputes and litigation
  • Partner with the legal department’s product attorneys on the company’s open source compliance and licensing processes
  • Manage to a budget

What we're looking for:

  • JD from accredited law school, with admission to at least one state bar; admission to practice before the USPTO preferred
  • At least 10 years of experience, including leading IP strategy and litigation in a global organization, and creatively and practically partnering with the business.
  • Experience in the software industry
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong leadership skills
  • The confidence and ability to interact with senior executives, clients, and co-workers in a professional, collaborative, and positive manner
  • Not afraid to ‘roll up your sleeves’ and work with details as well as the big picture

Gross base salary (USD): $202,700 - $274,200*

*Note: Certain locations require a good faith disclosure of the base salary range for the role. The actual salary for the successful candidate may differ based on location, experience, and other job-related factors.
