The Opportunity

The Director, Software Engineering - Live Ops will report to the VP Engineering, Player Services and will oversee the management of delivery, management of engineers and technical architecture for the LiveOPS suite of product. In this leadership role, you will motivate and grow a globally distributed development team of senior, Front-end, Back-end, DevOps and Site Reliability Engineers (SRE).

In this role, you will architect, design and deliver the liveOPS suite of products. You will have the responsibility to work with the Leadership team and other business/technical leaders to devise and execute a multi-year plan. 

Responsibilities:

  • Works with the GM Cloud, product management, and other engineering leaders to formulate a technical vision and short- and long-term plans for the Live Ops Business Unit.
  • Constantly work to accelerate the delivery of business goals and actively monitors the business’s needs and regularly adjusts those plans as needed. 
  • Communicates a clear and compelling vision to their team and works with other Unity teams to solve interdepartmental issues.
  • Leads the planning process, guiding team-specific roadmaps, driving alignment with the overall team vision, and ensuring consensus within the team.
  • Ensures timely updates to senior leadership about strategic projects and customer-impacting events and serves as the highest escalation path for most issues on the team.
  • Communicates clear expectations and ownership to direct reports and holds appropriate levels of accountability.
  • Provide a strong voice in guarding and evolving the engineering culture.

Essential Requirements:

  • Proficient in Cloud Technologies and their practical business applications, such as Google Cloud Platforms and Amazon Web Services.
  • Deep domain expertise and hands-on experience with live operation products in a production environment, either as a customer or a provider of such live systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in building, leading, and managing highly effective and high-performing technical teams with a focus on fostering strong team engagement.
  • Proven track record of delivering software APIs at scale to a vast developer base, reaching millions of users.
  • Extensive experience in managing sizable remote teams spread across multiple countries and time zones.
  • Strong ability to collaborate across a diverse, cross-functional engineering organization to drive outcomes aligned with the technical vision.
  • Effective communication skills, capable of engaging with business stakeholders and technical staff alike, tailoring communication appropriately for each audience.

  • Crisis Management Skills: Proficient in handling high-pressure situations and resolving critical issues swiftly to ensure uninterrupted live service operations.
  • Innovation and Adaptability: Skilled at fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within the engineering teams to drive product enhancements and technological advancements.
  • Vendor Management Experience: Familiarity with managing external vendors and service providers to ensure seamless integration and collaboration in the delivery of live services.
  • Regulatory Compliance Knowledge: Understanding of relevant regulations and compliance requirements, particularly in industries where live services operate, to ensure adherence to legal standards.
  • We are seeking a dynamic individual who can combine technical expertise, leadership acumen, and strategic vision to drive the success of our live services and lead our engineering teams to new heights.

Bonus Points:

  • BS/MS in Computer Science or Ph.D in Computer Science or engineering.
  • Experience dealing with web systems, databases, game development, infrastructure, and analytics.
  • Experience in leading game development teams
  • Have empathy and emotional intelligence to lead a diverse group of engineers and managers at varying stages of their careers
  • Models and sets the tone for how people collaborate and treat each other on the team
  • Able to work on and contribute to engineering-wide initiatives several times per year
  • Provides thoughtful counsel as a member of senior engineering leadership
  • Represents engineering at external events and can speak to Unity's mission and vision
