Your life at Ubi

As Game Designer Director at Ubisoft Bucharest, you will be working together with the team at Massive Entertainment to create a new story-driven open-world video game set in the Star Wars galaxy. Our goal is to create a game and a story that bring both new and lifelong fans on an immersive and outstanding journey, which will stay with them for years to come.

You’ll be an expert in the fundamentals of game design and be able to set vision for and deliver on core moment-to-moment gameplay. You will utilize your exceptional communication skills to ensure that the work of multiple teams aligns to create cohesive, exciting, and clearly understandable gameplay. You will also ensure that the work of this area aligns with that of the wider design direction of the project.

Moreover, you will make certain that the creative vision is translated in the game by the systems and that the player experience contains that vision. You will be responsible to communicate the game design vision to the teams and you will manage its implementation in the game.

Your main mission:

  • Collaborate with the Creative Director and Game Director to create a vision that is innovative, strong, appropriate, fitting within the game, and implementable by the team

  • Follow through and ensure that the project vision is reflected in all stages of design and implementation of game mechanics, systems, controls, and the player experience

  • Inspire and energize the team, utilizing pillars, research, and references to lead them towards creative success

  • Guide and support the game design team, defining the methods and strategies appropriate to the project and championing them

  • Demonstrate pragmatism, weighing the ‘perfect vision’ against the realities of development and seeing your project through to completion

  • Demonstrate an implicit understanding of the fundamentals of gameplay, including combat, 3Cs, and AI

  • Collaborate with transversal teams to integrate required features/requirements into paper designs and documentation

  • Generate briefs and oversee the implementation of prototypes/proofs of concept and evaluate their performance

  • Working with the Gameplay Producer, develop plans and roadmaps that account for technical and production constraints

  • Help to identify and manage risk and uncertainty associated with Action gameplay

  • Collaborate with other teams within the Ubisoft family, harmonizing design throughout the company and working directly with those other studios as necessary.

The professional value you bring:

  • Strong experience in video game design and production

  • At least 1 triple AAA console game shipped either as a game design lead or a game director

  • You know how to visualize behaviours and game situations on paper and best practices for prototyping iteratively

Nice to have:

  • Significant experience as a game designer on mechanics for gameplay (combat, traversal, encounters, game modes, etc.)

The personal value you bring:

  • You know how to communicate big ideas to executives, team members, and partner studios; a solid understanding of how to communicate effectively and know when to question yourself

  • You can succinctly define your vision and break it down to the smallest detail

  • You are an expert on the video game industry and its evolution, aware of market trends and equipped to lead your team in creating the next big hit

  • You’re a mentor, a guide, and a leader among your team

  • You are used to working in an international environment and expressing yourself fluently in English
