Lead Level Designer
The Molasses Flood is looking for a Lead Level Designer to help us create fun, functional and beautiful spaces for our next title. You will oversee the level design process for a game in which many environments will be procedurally generated.
As a team lead, you will oversee both hand-crafted and procedural level generation and design, ensure consistency across both and manage and mentor a small team of designers. You will also work collaboratively with the systems design, engineering, art and narrative teams to make sure that the spaces your team creates are beautiful, performant, fun and tell the story of the game. You will work with tech designers and tools engineers to ensure your team has all the tools they need to work happily and efficiently.
Our ideal candidate has a background in production level design, a solid understanding of level design principles, a strong technical background, familiarity with scripting systems and experience as a team lead or manager.
This is a full time salary position. Work may be performed remotely within the continental US, or per our hybrid work model in the greater Boston area (Tues/Thurs in our office and other 3 days per week WFH). Relocation assistance is available.
Oversee the creation of gameplay environments, both procedural and hand-crafted, across the game
Ensure functional and visual consistency across both hand-crafted and procedurally generated environments.
Mentor and lead a team of designers, teaching best practices and principles, and guiding their growth as designers.
Manage cross department communication and collaboration as it pertains to levels: work closely with engineers, artists, sound designers, and production in managing the prioritization, implementation, and scope of the game’s environments.
Lead by example, taking on direct responsibility for creating functional level layouts, and learning and mastering our procedural environment tools.
Prior experience shipping a core game as a Sr or Lead level designer
Experience with scripting systems, either visual (such as Blueprint) or text-based (such as Python, Lua, or C#)
The ability to communicate fluently with engineering, art, narrative and production
Candidates must have a US work permit or citizenship
Curiosity, kindness, and a positive and professional can-do attitude
