Founded in 2010 by the original creators of the Call of Duty Franchise, Respawn was created with the philosophy that when accomplished people have creative freedom, they'll make extraordinary games that achieve the unexpected. From our roots as an indie studio to joining the roster of studios at Electronic Arts, this remains our guiding principle. We love what we do and want to share our passion with players worldwide. Our shipped titles include critically acclaimed multi-platform games Apex Legends, Titanfall, Titanfall 2, Star Wars™ Jedi: Fallen Order, and Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond.

We are looking for a first-person-shooter level designer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a diverse range of experience and exposure to development on shooter games, including MP experience.

Why Join Us:

  • You seek the challenge of applying your level design expertise in new ways and in domains that you are less familiar with, and learning from those experiences to become a more well-rounded game developer.
  • You have an experimental side and curiosity for a unique opportunity that would use your substantial level design expertise in new ways.
  • You are excited to focus on gameplay and player-facing experiences through the lens of level geo and systemic gameplay, with latitude for creative experimentation and exploration.
  • "High autonomy, high responsibility, with low supervision," speaks to you and reflects how you work best.
  • Because we’re a smaller team in the early stages of building our level design team, your contributions will have a significantly formative impact on the project.
  • Our dev culture is gameplay-driven and emphasizes the value of sustained concentration time for work.
  • We often reflect upon and refine our team culture, to build trust and connection between teammates.
  • No crunch or overtime. We don't glorify this behavior!

Responsibilities:

  • Build level geo and prove out underlying principles of level design unique to our game that best highlight its systems and mechanics for our players’ enjoyment.
  • Through level design, mesh the game’s functional aspects cohesively with the flavor of the game's universe. Help us define new taxonomies, metrics, and develop expert techniques.
  • Develop 3D environments to creatively challenge our players' gameplay actions and abilities.
  • Some lightweight self-production: basic task breakdowns, estimates, and timekeeping.
  • Model the culture and help build the team. Rotate through interview panels with all disciplines, onboard new hires, help tend to team health and culture in open team discussions.
  • Promote and build an inclusive work environment.
  • Work with all disciplines and contribute to topics at the project level. While everyone has an area of focus, building a great game and a great development experience is everyone's responsibility.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years experience designing 3D real-time video game levels and building the geo for them.
  • We prefer an online portfolio showing shipped 3D real-time video game levels that you personally designed and built. (A list of specific time-indexes with links to publicly available videos and images will also suffice.)
    • Regardless of genre, your portfolio must reflect substantial hands-on experience in first-person shooter level design and geo construction. These can be initial blockouts or full end-to-end level design and construction through to ship. If you have MP work in your portfolio, please be sure to include that as well.
  • You’re able to explain your design process and critique maps in depth, demonstrating an understanding of the way level geometry, gameplay systems, and player psychology mesh to create fun player experiences.

If all this excites you, then we want to talk to you. Don’t let doubt deter you! We are an equal opportunity team excited about our next journey. We are always looking for adventurous people bursting with creativity to join us, so don’t hesitate to apply. (While we operate as a remote-first WFH team, we do have one stipulation: that our team members are located within +/- 3 hours of PST/PDT.)

To apply, please submit a resume and link to an online portfolio of work samples. We will get back to you once we have a chance to review!
