Among his diverse responsibilities, the Content Director of this Core team is in charge of the world building & narrative direction of the games co-developed with a partner studio, and as Narrative Designer you will report directly to him.

Under his direction, you will oversee directing and co-designing multiple parts of AAA narrative contents in one of Ubisoft’s flagship IPs, in collaboration with the designers in our co-dev partner studio.

Your main missions will therefore be the following:

  • Side missions design – direction & validation of side missions from high-level to final implementation
    • Directing the synopsis proposed by the mission designers (but also pitching / making propositions yourself), ensuring the coherency with the game world logic & context, with the Main Missions narrative, with the themes to explore. Making sure they respect the constraints of complexity, the scope, and the quality expectations of the IP.
    • Working closely with World Directors to adjust missions locations design in the open world to fit with level design & narrative.
    • Reviewing & feedbacking side missions documents (mission outlines/brief, missions detailed level design, level art design, etc) to secure they fit the synopsis intentions and the open world design.
    • Script reviews, ensuring they fit the IP style, the character voices, the theme of the mission, etc, and that all necessary info/lore exposition for players to understand the story is there.
    • Verifying implementation in build to reach the expected level of quality and ensure conformity with planned design.
    • Propose solutions at every step of the way in case of unexpected problems.
  • Main missions – support the narrative director in fine-tuning the implementation of main missions
    • Reviewing & feedbacking level design changes proposed by designers during implementation fine-tuning
    • Working closely with World Directors to adjust missions locations design in the open world to fit with the level design & narrative.
    • Directing script adjustments with the writers to fit iterations of level design or location design in the open world.
    • Verifying implementation in build to reach the expected level of quality and ensure conformity with planned design.
  • Cinematics & VO production – support direction of cinematics design & VO recording
    • VO actors casting – for side missions, for barks.
    • Side missions storyboard – review & feedback, make sure it fits the script, the style of presentation intended, the duration targeted, the locations of the scenes, etc.
    • Cinematics (first edit to final pass) – review & feedback, make sure it respects storyboard, VFX & SFX & props are correct, VO integration is correct, lip sync is ok, quality is there, etc.
    • Barks VO direction: review & feedback barks design & script, co-lead VO actors casting & recording for barks, etc.
  • - Be part of the production of narrative content with Ubisoft and our partner teams (scriptwriters and designers in particular):

    • Help structure the production of content by writers to meet the needs and constraints of game design
    • Have a role of Script Editor and be able to evaluate and produce feedback on the work of writers, able to edit or rewrite texts directly as needed (script doctoring)

What you need to succeed in this job:

  • You have significant experience as narrative designer, mission designer, world designer, or level designer, on a AAA open world game, ideally in a lead or director role
  • You already have a deep knowledge of our games and their universes (their worlds, stories and characters, key mechanics and game systems, etc.), you have a passion and a natural curiosity for the game worlds and take pleasure in exploring them in order to become an expert / "lore-master".

  • You are totally fluent in English (ability to write design documents and scenarii in English). Chinese will be a plus.

But what you will especially need is:

  • You are very comfortable with and you like to evolve in a multicultural environment, you know how to show patience, flexibility and adaptability with partners who are not from the same culture as yours. You are told to be a diplomat yet still assertive!
  • You have an analytical mind, and are able to assess, analyze, and above all to formalize constructed and substantiated reviews.
  • You are curious and creative, you like to go into details and do researches to support your proposals.
  • You have an excellent general knowledge of the entertainment industry (games, movies, TV series, books, comics, manga).
  • You are flexible and open to feedbacks to help you improve the quality of your work
  • You are very comfortable with and you like to evolve in a multicultural environment.
  • You know how to manage parallel project pipelines and to anticipate the fact that most of your contacts are not necessarily on the same time zone, nor on the same processes!
