We strive for execution excellence while being direct, humble, collaborative, and inclusive of diverse perspectives.

AMD together we advance_

THE ROLE:

We are looking for an established Principal Engineer to join our growing HPC Centre of Excellence (HPC CoE), to lead and collaborate with our Business Units on the technical engagement of the GPU and CPU opportunities, primarily in North America. In addition to being customer and partner-facing this is a ‘hands-on’ role working both independently and with other AMD engineers to tackle technical HPC performance issues, collaborating with our customer-facing Field Application Engineering ‘FAE’ and Sales colleagues, our GPU and CPU Business Units, and other key engineering groups (Architecture, Software, Platform).

With the team still growing we are especially keen to hear from engineers who in addition to the above knowledge and ability also have some experience in formally managing technical teams.

THE PERSON:

Does this sound familiar? We'd love to talk!

  • Clear and unambiguous track record of technical leadership with customers and partners on the largest HPC opportunities on the global stage
  • Strong positive can-do attitude willing to do what is necessary and lead others in the wider FAE team by example. Available to help colleagues.
  • Skilled in independently prioritizing opportunities to deliver results on time
  • Proven success establishing relationships both internally and across a network of customers and partners
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Open to travel both domestic and international, approximately 20%.
  • Fluent in English and already has the right to remain in the USA

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead technical engagement on behalf of the Centre of Excellence. Through a combination of your own technical ability and your networking skills (both within AMD and with partners) you bring together the resources needed for success
  • Predominantly focused on GPU business but not exclusively. Will also support data centre CPU-related business from time to time (both on-premise and cloud)
  • Proof of Concepts and demonstration of both EPYC and Instinct product lines with their respective Software Development Environments. Some code/kernel porting to Instinct during POC.
  • Demonstrated ability to make projections on future performance
  • Publish whitepapers on ISV application performance on both EPYC CPUs and Instinct GPUs for CFD, Energy, Structural Engineering. Identifying and documenting CPU/GPU engineering investigations in new areas of opportunity
  • Active engagement with Engineering, Architecture, Platform, Software, and Product Development teams providing feedback and leadership from the field on future direction
  • Provide direction to our Field Application Engineers and Sales teams during the sales cycle where the customer may require a deeper level of expertise. Act as mentor and coach to frontline Field Application Engineer on how to best manage technical engagements. Assist in creating TCO models to assist pricing with bid desk
  • Create training materials and provide training sessions at customer sites
  • Technically owning and resolving customer and partner issues. Submitting JIRA tickets and driving resolution
  • Automating repeatable procedures

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with HIP, CUDA and/or OpenACC experience runtime environments
  • Candidate has already won a number of large deals on the global stage, or has managed a team in that pursuit
  • Expertise in compiling large codes from source, with appropriately linked math libraries and flag optimisation. Strong understanding of different toolchains (ZenSS, Intel, CPE)
  • Proven understanding of baseline testing of popular synthetic and real world codes (e.g. HPL, OpenFOAM, GROMACS)
  • Understanding system level hardware and its configuration/impact on performance to enable projections on future performance
  • Customer-facing experience. Able to write technical documents and communicate at an appropriate level depending on the audience
  • Some Linux administration; understanding setup for HPC middleware.

Nice to Haves:

  • Proven senior level HPC application experience
  • Interest in possibly leading a small team in the future
  • Experience leading a technical team in addition to being ‘hands-on’
  • Experience working on very large codes such as weather/climate and associated tuning for greater scalability
  • Experience with AI and ML, ideally with common frameworks e.g. Pytorch
  • Any experience understanding/inspecting/writing assembly
  • Understanding of memory and cache hierarchy and methods to query performance/latency at each level
  • Understanding HPC dataflow down to the register-level
  • Security clearance for the national labs in the USA

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • Bachelors' Degree in a technical field (Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics) preferred
