THE ROLE:

The AMD Server engineering organization is seeking a customer facing Platform Firmware and Security Architect to lead technical engagements with customers developing platforms around AMD EPYC CPUs. In this role you would work closely with major technology companies across Cloud, Enterprise and HPC segments to solve complex firmware and security challenges for next generation servers. This is an individual contributor position

 

THE PERSON:

To be successful in this role you must have extremely strong domain expertise combined with a passion for helping customers solve problems and delivering the best possible customer experience. This is an individual contributor position with many touchpoints across internal teams and customers. You must enjoy working in a fast-paced, dynamic, and matrixed environment and thrive on collaboration. You should have a broad and deep understanding of server platform architecture and key technologies, extensive hands-on experience in server firmware development, deep knowledge of x86 ISA and hardware/firmware/software interfaces, and expertise in platform security. To thrive in this role you will need to use your strong communication skills to work with customers and internal partners, always seek to understand the problem which must be solved, comprehend the related risks and tradeoffs of various options, and draw upon your creativity and technical depth to identify elegant solutions. You will spend a significant portion of your time working directly with source code and leading FW and security related debug efforts.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work directly with customers and FW applications engineers to drive successful and timely integration and adoption of AMD FW technologies. Examples include RAS, telemetry, out of band management, At-Scale Debug, security features, and bug fixes.
  • Act as the voice of the customer to internal architecture and development teams, comprehending the customer needs, challenges and requests and working internally to drive solutions which meet customer needs with appropriate risks and tradeoffs.
  • Drive outgoing code quality improvements by identifying challenging or error-prone areas and collaborating with development teams and customers to streamline integration.
  • Drive task forces or debug efforts related to security or firmware issues which are complex and require extensive cross-team / cross-discipline collaboration.
  • Synthesize information and produce materials to communicate efficiently and effectively with internal stakeholders and customers at all levels of the organization. Must be an outstanding communicator with ability to adjust content to the target audience.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Deep knowledge of x86 instruction set and concepts such as interrupts, exceptions, microcode, privilege levels, addressing and memory management, speculation, SMT, power management, hardware/software interfaces, microcode, etc.
  • Multiple years of hands-on experience developing low level software such as BIOS/UEFI and drivers. Must be comfortable with assembly code.
  • Proven track record of shipping production code which was deployed at scale with high quality.
  • Expertise in software development lifecycle tools and concepts, DevOps, DevSecOps, CI/CD, git, configuration management, and static analysis. Demonstrated ability to drive improvements in code quality through these areas. 
  • Experience analyzing and addressing security issues in mass production. Understanding of key concepts such as threat modeling, threat vectors, side channel attacks, privilege escalation, persistence, anti-rollback, etc.  Must be able to work closely with security architects, firmware developers and customers to help navigate security issues and drive implementation of solutions.
  • Multiple years of experience working directly with customers in a technical capacity. Experience communicating technical details of errata, explaining root cause and workarounds/fixes, and helping customers assess risk and impact.

 

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • Undergraduate degree in related discipline, Master's degree preferred.
