Technical Writer Manager / Information Architect

 

THE PERSON:

As a Technical Writer Manager for AMD Software, you will be in a multi-faceted role that combines your leadership and people management experience with your abilities to establish a technical documentation team plan, along with forming information development strategies including the authoring and publishing of content. 

 

You will manage a team composing of Technical Writers and Editors that work closely with developers, designers, architects, program/project managers and product managers to plan, create, and edit documents covering software, firmware and system-level information.  This can span from specifications, product advisories and application notes to programming guides and reference guides for GPU products intended for technical and engineering-based audiences.

Documents evolve by various means, including interviewing subject matter experts (SMEs), gathering information from various records systems, and analyzing product and feature requirements documents.

 

THE ROLE:

This role provides a dynamic environment to work within, especially with the business requirements owners, technical content contributors and respective audiences for the resulting documentation.  Documentation deliverables will involve both AMD internal clients and external customers, so the impact of what is produced is high and requires a strong level of quality in every document’s content, layout and structure.  The potential and ability to creating effective, concise and accurate technical documentation for all parties is necessary to succeed in this role, along with ensuring your entire team upholds this level of performance with measurable improvements over time.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The ideal candidate would be a self-motivated individual who can prioritize and deliver multiple projects at a time with effective planning, delegation and assignment of multiple duties to a team of Writers and Editors, factoring each of your staff’s strengths and specializations.

 

Establishing strategies that align the technical documentation development lifecycle with the software development lifecycle is key to establishing and maintaining a strong relationship for your team’s engagement with the overall software community.  Alignment, roadmap planning and the strengthening of partnerships with other Technical Documentation teams in AMD will also be vital to ensure AMD’s business requirements for documentation are met.  Documentation is part of AMD’s product stack, treated as a critical deliverable, and the successful hire will uphold principles to realize and enhance this vision.

 

Your job responsibilities will also include identify gaps in content, inconsistencies in data, along with reviewing, performing "copyedit", and publishing documents using DITA XML in a Content Management System (CMS). Strong understanding of structured, topic-based, and task-based authoring is a must.

You must be able to adapt to changing requirements and schedules. This role requires that you possess strong critical-thinking skills and provides you with the opportunity to excel and greatly influence editing, reviewing and publishing processes as the primary writer on the team. You must also have a passion for technology, learning, and continuous improvement. A strong understanding of the documentation lifecycle is also required, as a monthly roadmap is defined to forecast, plan and execute all releases.

 

AMD provides solutions to customers that are geared to meet the graphics, computing and software requirements for their systems. The candidate will be required to demonstrate a basic understanding of how the various components and elements of hardware and software interact within a system. You will be joining a team and organization that comprises of various specializations of Program Management, Software/Firmware Development and System Engineering.  You must be able to work closely with these individuals and contribute to the overall technical documentation release plan, which also factors collaboration with staff from sites all over the world.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • At least 10 years of technical writing experience in a technical field (Engineering or Computer Science background is not required, but strongly desired)
  • At least 5 years of People Management experience.  Experience in the role of an Information Architect is strongly desired.
  • Experience authoring in DITA XML in a component content management system (CMS), preferably Ixiasoft DITA XML CMS and or Tridion Docs (SDL) is required.  Experience with other DITA XML CMS systems may be considered.
  • Experience working in an Eclipse development environment and oXygen XML Editor or similar application is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with the components that make up a gaming, workstation and server platform with integrated and discrete processing solutions.
  • Familiarity with software UI design concepts and writing for localization along with experience writing task-based and context-sensitive help files
  • Self-starter, must be comfortable working as a People Manager with some Technical Writing tasks
  • Excellent writing, copyediting, and communication skills
  • Ability to deliver results with attention to detail and sense of urgency
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and adapt to changing deadlines and schedules
  • Experience with HTML, Markdown, Restructured Text, DOxygen and Github
  • Experience working with version control systems - JIRA, JAMA, Confluence, SharePoint

 

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • BA or BS degree is required
