THE ROLE: 

Looking for an innovative problem solver and thermal technical leader responsible for defining, driving, and managing thermal development of gaming class mobile and desktop products.  While working within the AMD Client thermal organization, this role will interface with silicon and system architecture teams, system design and performance, BIOS and SMU engineering, customer engineering, and OEM/ODM customers directly.

 

THE PERSON: 

Candidate should have a strong background in new product development, computer system architecture, mechanical design for high volume manufacturing, design for cost, and system-level safety, ergonomic and acoustic standards.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Lead thermal development of Gaming products, optimizing performance from silicon to OEM system level
  • Directly interface with OEM/ODM customer thermal and mechanical design teams leading system thermal definition, design, and thermal Optimization activities.  Provide estimated cost for various design options.
  • Interface with silicon and system CPU / GPU architecture teams, system design and performance, BIOS and SMU engineering, customer engineering.
  • Thermal and mechanical modeling, design, and testing of components.
  • Optimization of Gaming Systems features including STT and Smart Shift.
  • Work across client system engineering to ensure delivery of class-leading designs – Performance, battery life, and form factor.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: 

  • Strong background in design, optimization, and tuning of mobile computing products. 
  • Detailed understanding of PC system architecture, mobile system mechanical, board design, and power delivery. 
  • Depth and expertise in thermal, power and performance tradeoffs and resulting impacts to delivered product competitiveness and user experiences
  • Experience with design for ergonomics – skin temperature, acoustic, performance and battery life optimization
  • Experience in the PC architecture space and familiarity with hands-on system setup & testing.
  • Direct technical experience on APU/CPU system performance analysis 
  • Understand CPU and GPU architecture and thermal controls for APU/CPU, GPU, and combinations of these. 
  • Knowledge of Firmware controlled system power and thermal management requirements and features.
  • Experience with system layout optimization, chassis design, and thermal solution sizing to meet performance and sizing requirements. 
  • Must have deep knowledge of all key system thermal components and new technologies including fans, heatsinks, shielding, spreaders, Thermal Interface Materials.
  • Depth of system knowledge of all key components and sub-systems which impact thermals (VRAM, NVME, VR, Memory, Charging circuit, etc).
  • Understand power, performance, and thermal issues and interactions at system level. Able to quickly identify issues and drive alternate solutions.
  • Effective with communication and building respect while communicating status to executive level audience
  • Ability to quickly identify thermal design problems and drive alternate solutions.
  • Expert knowledge in heat transfer and fluid mechanics with advanced level experience in system CFD modeling using Icepak or Flotherm.  Mechanical cad modeling with Creo or Solidworks also required.
  • Extensive lab experience required and should include: Labview programming and data acquisition, system teardown and instrumentation.

 

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS: 

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in MSME with several years of commercial experience
