Director Purchasing

 

THE ROLE:

This role will be responsible for partnering with product architects, engineering, Operations, and key suppliers to drive a cost-effective design for next gen products. This will require expertise in high-tech electronics price negotiation, understanding the latest product offerings by key suppliers and developing negotiation strategies to enable long term component engagements. Candidate will be expected to establish and maintain relationships with our key suppliers and with the key stakeholders within AMD Business Units.  Requires strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to summarize complex issues for executives internal to AMD and with component partners.   Role will require partnering with functional, technical, legal, finance, and supply chain to execute commercial agreements.   

THE PERSON:

This position requires an assertive and steady leadership style, enabling pro-active identification of cost saving opportunities in product designs and suggest opportunities. Success in this role requires cultivating and maintaining strong relationships through influence across many functions including: Global Operations and Quality (GOQ) leadership team, Board Operations, Product architecture teams, engineering, Legal and Finance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop technical relationships with key semiconductor suppliers and partner with BU, Engineering to align on roadmap/technology needs in line with cost targets.
  • Develop cost models to determine should cost and total cost of ownership (TCO) with stakeholders and leverage in supplier negotiations. Lock in the most competitive pricing with Key suppliers.
  • Lead and manage a team of sourcing managers ensuring they are executing assigned responsibilities to drive cost reductions, ensure component supply for products.  
  • Identify and Drive key product/BU cost improvement projects via cross functional teams/stakeholders throughout product life cycle.
  • Drive multi sourcing and cost engineering discussions with board designers at product definition stage to have a cost and supply effective design. 
  • Work closely with BOPS to support all component supply.  
  • Drive roadmap alignment with supplier partners to yield optimal solution cost, capability and ensuring continuity of supply and clear ownership of inventory liability.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 8 years OR PhD plus 7 years of experience in Hi-Tech or business field.
  • Strong experience in high-performance semiconductor and complex boards and systems level product development, sourcing and production.   
  • Demonstrated leadership of a small team to deliver significant results.
  • Electronics Industry experience. Multi-source supplier network.      
  • Strong leadership and communications skills
  • Capability to personally lead critical business change projects if and as required. 
  • Experience in the Direct Procurement function. 
  • Experience in supply chain management

 

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering. M.B.A. preferred
